Apple carving...

For our seminar this week we were ask to respond to an object or the ready made. Being predominantly a painter, I had no incline of what I was going to make. Then this idea came to me about using the apple as it is one of the most iconic symbols associated with Fairytales. I attempted to carve a wolf's mouth from the apple inspired by Angela Carters Novel and film adaptation, 'The Company of Wolves'. I wanted to demonstrate the idea that the apple may be shiny and inviting on the outside yet in the inside it is poisonous and rotten, which is my reflection when analyzing Fairytales. Carving from apple is something i found really challenging but completely enjoyable! I ended up completing three of them. I intend to do some more and maybe develop this further into additional mediums such as clay, plaster, wax and hopefully bronze. It will also be interesting to note how the apples change over time.
